-ship was in reality an honorary post, and when Mr. Ross

resigned the appointment on his transfer to the Land Court it

was offered to and accepted by Mr. Kemp without remuneration.

But Sir William Gascoigne appears to have concurred in Mr.

Lockhart's opinion that it would be hardly fair to employ Mr.

Ross in the Colonial Secretary's Office and as Secretary to

the Squatter's Board without giving hin the same advantages

as regards pay which were enjoyed by other junior Cadets.
